Concepts of Isolation – an exhibition by Clemens Krauss hosted by Wooyoungmi

‘Concepts of Isolation’ is a series of paintings by the artist Clemens Krauss, created as a collaborative work for Wooyoungmi AW12. It is his own interpretation of the Wooyoungmi AW 2012 collection, for which the designer’s drew inspiration from another artist, Edward Hopper, and in particular the painting “Nighthawks”, his depiction of lonely urban dwellers.

Krauss is the second artist to participate in what will be an ongoing project of collaborations between Wooyoungmi and emerging art talent. Born in Graz, Austria and having completed his MA in Fine Art at London’s Central St. Martins College in 2004, Krauss now lives and works in Berlin. He has exhibited his work around the world – from Museu de Arte Moderna, Recife, Brazil, and MOCA Los Angeles, to Berlinische Galerie, Museum of Modern Art, Berlin, and Kulturhuset, Stockholm, Sweden, amongst others.

Due to Krauss’ medical-biological background – he holds degrees in both Medicine and Fine Art – his investigations are often affected by natural science. His central concern is the human body. He operates between performance, painting, photography and site specific installation, with each approach sharing the same conceptual framework. Krauss is interested in the body as a scene of identity, individuality and society, and the question of the relation between the outer appearance and the inner life of the body.

The painting “Laughter and Value“, which will run as the Wooyoungmi print advertising campaign for AW12, is part of the series “Concepts of Isolation“. According to the artist, it deals with the predetermined weak spots of current social constellations and its coping strategies. Although the result is a sort of narrative moment, the artist intends a process of free association, in the way that remembrance works, in order to get to the possibilities of the individual and his points of contact with the predetermined weak spots.

The exhibition launched on the 10th August with a event attended by both the artist and the designers.
